RCMP issue warnings over cellphone and gold scams in British Columbia

Scammers pose as service providers, claiming there is an issue with the device and requesting it be returned via a provided prepaid shipping label. These labels direct the devices to private addresses rather than the carrier. Authorities noted that fraudsters appear to possess specific details regarding recent purchases and deliveries.

In Kelowna, the RCMP is reporting a surge in distraction thefts and fake gold scams. In distraction thefts, suspects use deception or emotional manipulation to steal valuables, such as jewelry, often targeting seniors. Additionally, individuals have reported being approached by people claiming financial distress who offer jewelry as collateral or at heavily discounted prices, which later proves to be counterfeit. Police advise the public to remain cautious of unsolicited offers and strangers attempting to enter their personal space.
