RCMP ramps up community policing in Trail, BC and Iqaluit, Nunavut

The Trail detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police reported a 17% rise in calls for service in the second quarter of 2026, handling 1,036 calls compared with 884 a year earlier. Increases were noted across property offences, sexual offences and drug investigations, the latter climbing from two to 16 cases. Staff Sgt. Dave Johnson said the uptick reflects more third‑party reporting and a focused effort on downtown foot patrols to counter open drug use.

In Iqaluit, RCMP officers adopted a proactive model that includes ATV patrols, random traffic stops and outreach at community events. Cpl. Darick Ramminger told council that in May officers completed 36 patrols and responded to about 1,000 calls, over 400 of which were alcohol‑related and resulted in 45 charges. A June operation seized an illegal handgun and drugs, and officers plan to continue the heightened visibility through the fall and winter months.
