BC Highway Patrol records record impaired‑driving arrests at Sunfest

BC Highway Patrol announced that 36 impaired‑driving offences were recorded during the four‑day Sunfest music festival near Lake Cowichan, surpassing the previous record of 25 set in 2024. The enforcement action resulted in 153 violation tickets, 19 three‑day immediate roadside prohibitions, nine 90‑day prohibitions, six 24‑hour suspensions, six excessive‑speed impounds and two 12‑hour suspensions.

Inspector Adam Tallboy, Officer in Charge of the B.C. Highway Patrol on Vancouver Island, said the spike shows “outrageously poor decision‑making” and warned motorists to expect more traffic checks and mandatory alcohol screening, which requires drivers to provide a breath sample on demand regardless of suspicion.

The patrol indicated it will continue to assess public events and use all legal tools available to improve road safety.
