Nelson RCMP seize $42,000 in illicit nicotine products

The Nelson RCMP, supported by the BC Highway Patrol, executed search warrants at two commercial businesses in Castlegar and Nelson on September 16, 2026. The operation resulted in the seizure of illicit nicotine products with an estimated value of approximately $42,000.

Investigators noted that many of the seized items appeared to be counterfeit products designed to mimic well-known brands. In Canada, nicotine pouches are strictly regulated by Health Canada as therapeutic smoking cessation aids rather than recreational products. Under current regulations, authorized products must meet specific nicotine concentration standards and are restricted to sale behind pharmacy counters. Additionally, fruit- and candy-flavoured nicotine pouches are prohibited to reduce appeal to youth.

The investigation into the sale of these contraband pouches is ongoing, with charges pending review by the Public Prosecution Service of Canada.
