RCMP warn of scam targeting new cell phone owners
The North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP have issued a warning regarding a scam targeting individuals who have recently purchased new cell phones through legitimate wireless providers.
In this scheme, scammers contact victims claiming to represent their service provider. The perpetrators falsely claim that the wrong device was shipped and instruct the victim to return the phone using a prepaid shipping label provided via email. Once the victim ships the device, the package is delivered to an unauthorized address rather than the service provider. Victims are left without their original device and never receive the promised replacement.
Constable Tessa McDonald of the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP noted that the scammers can be convincing by using information that makes the request appear legitimate. Authorities advise consumers to verify any return requests directly with their service provider using a verified phone number before sending any equipment.
