RCMP warns of fraudulent health card replacement text messages

The RCMP is warning residents in Alberta about a fraudulent text message scam. The messages falsely claim that recipients’ health cards are no longer valid and must be replaced through an online application for a new ‘Electronic Health Identification System’ to maintain healthcare access.

The scam uses urgent language and official-looking branding to pressure individuals into clicking a link and providing sensitive personal, financial, or health information. Authorities remind the public that government agencies do not send unsolicited text messages requesting such information via online links.

To protect against identity theft, the RCMP advises individuals not to click on suspicious links, to delete such messages immediately, and to verify any government requests through official websites or phone numbers. Those who believe they have been compromised should contact their financial institutions and report the incident to local police or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
