RDEK board to decide on time observance following regional survey
The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) board of directors is set to decide on time observance during a meeting on Friday, August 14, 2026. This decision follows a regional survey that received over 14,000 responses from residents and communities.
According to the survey results, 66% of respondents expressed a preference for Daylight Saving Time, while a strong majority of 89% indicated they would prefer to end semi-annual clock changes in favor of staying on a single time year-round.
The issue stems from a provincial decision earlier this spring to move to permanent Pacific Daylight Savings. However, this change did not affect regions within the Mountain Time Zone. The province has granted individual communities in these areas the jurisdiction to choose their own time observance, such as maintaining the status quo or adopting permanent Mountain Standard or Daylight Savings time.
