Rádio MEC explores Beethoven and Napoleão Bonaparte relationship

Rádio MEC will broadcast a new edition of the “Música e História” series as part of its “Caderno de Música” program this Sunday at 12:30. The episode focuses on the complex relationship between composer Ludwig van Beethoven and French leader Napoleão Bonaparte.

The program explores how political tensions and the Napoleonic Wars influenced Beethoven’s creative output, specifically his transition from admiring Napoleon as a republican hero to viewing him as a tyrant. This shift is highlighted through his Symphony No. 3, known as “Eroica,” which was originally dedicated to Napoleon before the composer withdrew the dedication following Napoleon's self-proclamation as emperor.

Listeners will hear musical excerpts including the “Eroica” symphony and its funeral march, performed by the Berlin Philharmonic under the direction of Herbert von Karajan. Other featured works include the sonata “Les Adieux,” performed by pianist Gerhard Oppitz, and “Wellington's Victory.” The program aims to connect historical events with classical music, providing educational context on musical terms and genres.
