RDOS board opposes encrypted radio proposal for Penticton Fire
The Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen (RDOS) board has expressed opposition to a proposal to fund digitally encrypted radios for the Penticton Fire Department. RDOS staff requested $192,000 from a reserve fund intended for regional 9-1-1 system upgrades to cover the costs.
While the initiative aims to enhance firefighter safety and security, board members raised concerns regarding the use of regional funds for City of Penticton upgrades. Directors also questioned the operational impact of encryption, noting that it could hinder mutual aid efforts. Princeton Mayor and Director Spencer Coyne highlighted that the encryption might create disadvantages when working with neighboring communities and agencies, such as BC Wildfire, which currently relies on analog radio systems.
