REA toolkit enables AI-driven reverse engineering of software

The open-source project REA (Reverse Engineer Anything) has seen a massive surge in popularity, gaining over 100,000 stars on GitHub in early October. The toolkit functions as a bridge between AI coding agents—such as Claude Code, Cursor, and Codex—and traditional reverse-engineering tools like Ghidra, IDA Pro, and Hopper.

By allowing AI agents to interact with software through natural language, REA enables the analysis of programs without access to source code. It can investigate native binaries, JavaScript/Electron applications, .NET assemblies, Android APKs, and websites. The tool provides technical evidence, such as pseudocode and module graphs, to help agents understand and potentially reconstruct software functionality.

In a related development, Linux creator Linus Torvalds has begun utilizing Anthropic’s Claude Code to assist in kernel development. Torvalds recently credited the AI agent with helping to generate code, prepare tests, and draft documentation for a patch addressing Linux kernel memory management and page cache performance.
