React Foundation launches under Linux Foundation as Shopify shifts to native mobile

The React Foundation has officially launched as an independent entity hosted by the Linux Foundation. This transition means that React, React Native, and JSX are no longer owned by Meta. The foundation includes eight platinum founding members: Amazon, Callstack, Expo, Huawei, Meta, Microsoft, Software Mansion, and Vercel. Seth Webster will serve as the executive director, while a provisional leadership council will establish a technical governance structure that remains independent from the foundation's board.

In a separate development regarding mobile development strategies, Shopify has announced it is migrating its mobile applications from React Native back to native languages, specifically Swift and Kotlin. The company noted that while React Native performed effectively—maintaining high stability and speed—the emergence of coding agents and LLMs has reduced the cost of building native apps for both platforms, making the single-codebase approach less economically advantageous.
