Reading and Leeds festivals replace BBC Introducing stage with The Canopy
The Reading and Leeds festivals have replaced the long-standing BBC Introducing stage with a new platform called The Canopy. The BBC Introducing stage, which operated for nearly two decades, was known for launching the careers of major artists such as Ed Sheeran, Charli XCX, and Sam Fender.
Festival organizers, including Festival Republic, stated that The Canopy is designed to offer a wider range of opportunities for emerging talent by opening the platform to a broader pool of artists. However, the inaugural lineup has faced criticism from fans and industry observers who have labeled it a “nepo baby stage” due to the inclusion of several children of famous celebrities. Performers include Violet Grohl, daughter of Dave Grohl; Cruz Beckham, son of David and Victoria Beckham; Gene Gallagher, son of Liam Gallagher; and Moses Martin, son of Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow.
The 2026 festival edition also featured structural changes, including the renaming of the main stage to The Grid. Despite heavy rain causing muddy conditions at Reading, the event proceeded with major performances from artists such as Florence + The Machine and Chase & Status.
