Reading initiatives in Belgium promote language development
Various reading programs in Belgium are highlighting the importance of storytelling for language acquisition and literacy. In Ninove, the local library is participating in the 2026 Reading Week from November 21 to 28. The initiative includes themed sessions such as ‘Friends’ and ‘Dinosaurs,’ as well as sensory reading experiences designed to engage children's senses and stimulate imagination.
In Kortrijk, the ‘Leesnest’ project utilizes volunteers to read to toddlers, specifically targeting children who may not have Dutch as a primary language at home. By combining reading with educational games, the program aims to bolster vocabulary and prepare children for primary school. Participants have reported noticeable improvements in language fluency and vocabulary among children involved in the sessions.
