Reading, Massachusetts Propane Tank Leak Evacuates 13 Homes

A 20‑pound propane tank on Washington Street in Reading, Massachusetts began leaking on August 4, prompting a homeowner to call 911. Fire Chief Rick Nelson confirmed the leak and the tank’s bulging side, noting the potential for a catastrophic explosion.

Reading police, fire, the state Hazmat Team and the Bomb Squad responded, evacuating 13 nearby households and closing Washington and Green Streets. A temporary shelter was set up at the local library while officials secured the tank and transported it to the town’s Department of Public Works for safe disposal. After roughly two hours, the evacuation order was lifted and residents were allowed to return home. Officials reminded the public to inspect propane tanks for rust or damage and to replace them safely.

The incident caused no injuries and highlighted local emergency response procedures for hazardous gas leaks.
