Ready Player Two film moves forward as screenwriter Zak Penn confirms script work
Screenwriter Zak Penn has confirmed that development on the film adaptation of Ernest Cline’s novel *Ready Player Two* is ongoing. In an interview with The Direct, Penn said simply, “I am working on it,” marking the first substantive update on the sequel since 2022.
The sequel will not be directed by Steven Spielberg, who helmed the 2018 *Ready Player One* adaptation. Spielberg will remain attached as a producer, while Warner Bros. Pictures continues to explore the project. No casting or additional crew details have been announced.
*Ready Player One* earned over $607 million worldwide on a $175 million budget, and the sequel is expected to follow the book’s plot, in which protagonist Wade Watts discovers a new brain‑computer interface called ONI that could reshape the virtual world OASIS. Early release windows have been floated for 2027‑2028, contingent on production schedules.
The confirmation revives fan expectations for a continuation of the OASIS saga, with returning characters such as Wade Watts, Art3mis, Aech and Shoto potentially reprising their roles.
