Reagan National Airport to receive new surface movement radar
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy has announced the installation of a new Surface Movement Radar (SMR-4) at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA). The technology is designed to enhance the ability of air traffic controllers to track aircraft and vehicles on runways and taxiways, regardless of weather or visibility conditions, to prevent incursions.
The upgrade is part of a broader effort by the Trump Administration to modernize the national air traffic control system. The Department of Transportation plans to invest $30.5 million into DCA over the next three years, funded by the Working Families Tax Cuts Act. Other ongoing improvements at the airport include the replacement of 67% of its copper wiring with high-speed fiber to improve communications.
