Real Academia Española presents 24th edition of Spanish dictionary
The Real Academia Española (RAE) has released the 24th edition of the Diccionario de la lengua española (DLE), marking the first major print update since 2014. The new edition is described by RAE Director Santiago Muñoz Machado as the first “native digital” dictionary, having been developed from a digital base to allow for future technological integrations, such as visual information.
The update includes over 6,000 new entries, bringing the total to 99,990 articles and approximately 209,000 definitions. New vocabulary reflects contemporary social, technological, and environmental shifts, featuring terms such as “influencer,” “pódcast,” “gordofobia,” “ecoansiedad,” “metaverso,” and “inteligencia artificial.”
As a pan-Hispanic work, the edition incorporates a significantly higher presence of Americanisms and regional terms from across the Spanish-speaking world. Examples include “guámbito” from Colombia, “cocotaxi” from Cuba, and “motoconcho” from the Dominican Republic. The presentation, held at the RAE headquarters in Madrid, included directors from the 23 other academies of the Association of Academies of the Spanish Language (ASALE).
