Argentina faces housing deficit and rising household debt

Argentina is facing significant socio-economic challenges regarding housing and household debt. According to the Atlas de la Vivienda Digna y Sustentable, 40.67% of Argentine households—approximately 6.4 million—experience some form of housing deficit. While 687,000 households require new construction, the majority face qualitative issues such as overcrowding, inadequate materials, or lack of basic services. Notably, only 61.7% of households have access to a sewage network.

The housing crisis is particularly acute for young adults; approximately 2.5 million people aged 25 to 35 are unable to live independently from their families. In provinces like Tucumán, Salta, and Santiago del Estero, the inability to emancipate exceeds 50%.

Simultaneously, household debt is rising. In Buenos Aires province, 1.84 million people are in arrears, with unpaid debts totaling $6.49 trillion pesos. National delinquency rates reached 17.4% in June 2026, with a sharp increase to 36.84% among citizens under 25. Private estimates also suggest that poverty rates in the first half of 2026 may have risen to between 31% and 32% due to rising utility costs and loss of purchasing power.
