Real Instituto Elcano postpones presidential appointment

The Board of the Real Instituto Elcano has decided to postpone the appointment of its new president. To resolve the leadership transition, the Board unanimously agreed to create an ad hoc Appointment Commission to evaluate the candidacy of Federico de Torres, the current Spanish Ambassador and Permanent Representative to NATO.

Federico de Torres was proposed as a candidate by Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares. The Board intends to hold an extraordinary meeting in October to reach a final decision. This move follows months of internal tension regarding the succession process.

José Juan Ruiz, who has led the institute since 2021, will remain in his role as acting president until the process is concluded. Additionally, Minister Albares announced the transfer of the Institute's headquarters for a five-year period and proposed reforms to the statutes to better regulate the election procedures for the president and director.
