China imposes sanctions on La Liga and Mbappé following controversial remarks

A diplomatic and commercial crisis has emerged between China and Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé after the player referred to a meme depicting him as Mao Zedong as involving a “Chinese dictator” during a podcast interview.

In response, the China Media Group (CMG) has reportedly suspended broadcasts of La Liga matches on its streaming platform, Migu, including Real Madrid’s upcoming fixture against Racing Santander. Commercial repercussions have also intensified, with at least three Chinese companies, including Dongpeng, Mengniu, and Milkground, reportedly terminating their sponsorship agreements with Mbappé. Additionally, his image is being removed from various Chinese social media platforms and retail products.

Both Kylian Mbappé and La Liga President Javier Tebas have issued apologies to the Chinese people. Real Madrid also released a formal statement expressing respect for China’s history and culture. Despite these efforts, Chinese state media and officials have maintained a critical stance, and some reports suggest the boycott may continue.
