Real Madrid appoints José Mourinho as coach, unveils five new signings

José Mourinho begins his second spell as Real Madrid head coach on 22 August, with the team’s first league match against Espanyol. Five days later the club will learn its Champions League group‑stage opponents.

Madrid’s summer transfer activity added five players: Dutch right‑back Denzel Dumfries for €20 million from Inter Milan, French centre‑back Ibrahima Konaté on a free transfer after leaving Liverpool, Spanish full‑back Marc Cucurella for €55 million plus €5 million in add‑ons from Chelsea, Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva on a two‑year deal after Manchester City, and striker Carlos Espí, who scored 11 goals for Levante last season.

Departures included Mario Martín, Dani Carvajal, David Alaba, Dani Ceballos and Fran García. Mourinho has stressed that honesty, a lesson he says he learned from his father, is the cornerstone of his relationship with the squad, promising a straightforward but demanding approach.
