Real Madrid’s newly appointed manager José Mourinho told club president Florentino Pérez that he wants Brazilian winger Vinicius Jr to stay for the next season. Vinicius’s contract expires next year, leaving Madrid with the options of selling him now for a good fee or letting him leave on a free transfer next summer. Mourinho said the upcoming signing of Ivorian defender Yan Diomande will not alter his desire to keep the winger, although the transfer has caused the club to postpone other targets such as Michael Olise.

Former Real Madrid academy striker Borja Mayoral, in an interview, criticised Mourinho’s attitude in the dressing‑room, calling the coach “unable to lose gracefully” and saying his comments sometimes hurt teammates. Mayoral also praised Mourinho’s highly competitive training sessions but stressed that respect must come first.
