Real Madrid faces defensive crisis amid multiple injuries

Real Madrid is facing a defensive crisis due to a series of injuries to key personnel. Raúl Asencio is set to undergo surgery for a tibial stress fracture, which is expected to sideline him for two to three months. This injury, combined with the ongoing absence of Éder Militão and a recent injury to Ibrahima Konaté, has severely depleted the squad's central defense options.

In response to these shortages, manager José Mourinho is considering 19-year-old central defender Mario Rivas for upcoming matchday squads. Rivas, who previously played in the Primera Federación and helped Spain win the UEFA European Under-19 Championship, has been included in several matchday squads this season but has yet to make his official debut.

The current situation highlights previous difficulties in the transfer market. During the summer 2026 window, Mourinho's efforts to bolster the squad included signings such as Ibrahima Konaté and Bernardo Silva, but the club failed to secure a primary midfield target, Rodri, who ultimately chose Barcelona. Mourinho had also identified the need for additional central defensive cover to stabilize the backline, a requirement that has become urgent following the recent string of injuries.
