Real Madrid seeks €80 million from six Premier League clubs
Real Madrid is seeking approximately €80 million in compensation from six English Premier League clubs regarding the failed European Super League (ESL) project. The Spanish club maintains that Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur remain financially liable for the initial setup and promotional costs of the competition.
Although the ESL project collapsed in 2021 following intense public and fan opposition, Real Madrid argues that the founding members are bound by the shareholders' agreement signed for the European Super League Company. While most clubs withdrew within days of the announcement, Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Juventus continued to bear the financial burden of the project for several years.
Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez has previously asserted that departing clubs cannot simply ignore their legal and financial commitments. The English clubs have historically maintained that their withdrawal, prompted by social pressure, concluded their obligations. If an out-of-court settlement is not reached, the dispute could escalate into a significant legal conflict within European football.
