Rebeca Grynspan leads fifth UN Secretary-General straw poll

Rebeca Grynspan, a Costa Rican diplomat, maintained her position as the frontrunner in the fifth informal United Nations Security Council straw poll to select the next Secretary-General. The vote, held on Wednesday, October 7, under the Greek presidency of the Security Council, revealed a complex geopolitical landscape. Grynspan secured nine encouraging votes and six discouraging votes, a slight decline in support compared to the previous poll on September 29, where she received ten encouraging votes and three discouraging votes.

Rafael Grossi, Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, placed second with six positive, seven negative, and two neutral votes. Carolyn Rodrigues Birkett of Guyana followed in third with five positive, nine negative, and one neutral vote. Other candidates included Macky Sall, who received five positive and ten negative votes; Olara Otunnu, who received three positive and twelve negative votes; Maria Fernanda Espinosa, who received three positive, nine negative, and three neutral votes; and Ivonne Baki, who received no positive votes.

Aglaia Balta, the Greek Permanent Representative to the UN, confirmed the completion of the fifth round. While Grynspan leads, the increase in negative votes suggests that a broad consensus among the 15 Security Council members has not yet been reached, and the potential for vetoes from permanent members remains a significant hurdle in the succession process.
