Rebeca Grynspan leads UN Secretary‑General straw poll
An informal, non‑binding poll of the United Nations Security Council on 30 July showed former Costa Rican vice‑president Rebeca Grynspan as the front‑runner to succeed Antonio Guterres as UN secretary‑general. Grynspan received ten "encourage" votes, one "discourage" vote and four abstentions, the strongest result among the seven candidates. Former Guyana foreign minister Carolyn Rodrigues‑Birkett placed second with nine encourage votes, two discourage votes and four abstentions, while Argentine IAEA chief Rafael Grossi earned seven encourage votes, two discourage votes and six abstentions.
Grynspan, an economist who currently heads UNCTAD and is the daughter of Holocaust survivors, would become the first woman and the first person of Jewish origin to hold the post if elected. The incumbent secretary‑general, Portuguese politician António Guterres, will finish his second five‑year term on 31 December 2026, and the successor is slated to take office on 1 January 2027. The poll, conducted by all 15 Security Council members, is exploratory and will be followed by additional rounds before a final selection is made.
