Denmark discovers largest Viking Age silver hoard in backyard

A homeowner in Rebild, Denmark, has discovered the largest known Viking Age silver hoard in the country while preparing his garden for a new terrace. The find consists of approximately 700 objects and fragments, weighing a total of 18.5 kilograms (41 pounds).

According to the North Jutland Museums (Nordjyske Museer), the treasure dates back to the 10th century. About 320 items, weighing 6.4 kilograms, were found intact within an original clay vessel, while the remaining pieces were scattered in the surrounding soil. The collection includes silver bars, bracelets, 47 coins or coin fragments, and a small pendant shaped like Thor’s hammer.

The discovery significantly exceeds Denmark’s previous record-holder, the Terslev hoard, which weighed approximately 6.5 kilograms. Archaeologists note that the variety of items, including Anglo-Saxon pennies and Arabic dirhams, provides critical insight into Viking-era trade networks and the use of silver as a medium of exchange.
