Recanto das Emas police arrest couple after newborn found charred
A couple has been arrested in Recanto das Emas, Distrito Federal, following the discovery of a newborn baby's charred body in a trash heap. Security footage captured the mother carrying a bag to the location, where she appeared to hesitate before abandoning it under the direction of her partner.
The mother initially claimed she had suffered a spontaneous abortion, but investigators are treating the case as infanticide. The presence of a placenta attached to the body has led authorities to investigate whether the child was born alive and subsequently killed.
Police are currently conducting forensic examinations at the suspects' residence to check for the presence of abortive medications. The Medical Legal Institute (IML) is performing autopsies to determine the exact cause of death and whether the infant was alive at the time of disposal. Both the mother and her partner remain in custody.
