Recife inaugurates megamural honoring Chico Science

A new megamural titled ‘Chila, Relê, Domilindró’ has been inaugurated in Recife to honor the legacy of Chico Science, the creator of the Manguebeat movement. The artwork, created by visual artist Arem, spans approximately eight floors of a building located at the corner of Rua da Guia and Avenida Barbosa Lima in the Recife neighborhood.

Standing 25 meters high, the mural uses geometric shapes to provide a contemporary interpretation of Science’s artistic universe and the Manguebeat movement, which blended traditional Maracatu rhythms with rock, hip hop, and electronic music. The project is part of the ‘Recife Cidade da Música’ initiative promoted by the Recife City Hall.

The inauguration ceremony included Science’s daughter, Louise França, as well as members of Nação Zumbi such as Dengue, Toca Ogan, and Maestro Mateus.
