Recife's Festival A Letra e a Voz showcases cross‑cultural poetry performances

The Festival Recifense A Letra e a Voz presented two free performances at the Teatro de Santa Isabel in Recife. On 1 August, the literary show “O Mar que nos Habita” offered a dynamic reading that linked Brazil, Africa and Portugal, featuring poems by João Cabral de Melo Neto, Castro Alves, Mia Couto and José Craveirinha among others. The event was curated by writer Plínio Pacheco Oliveira and included actors Fabiana Pirro, Nínive Caldas, Júnior Sampaio, Gheuza, Mayra Waquim and live music by Márcio Oliveira. Attendance was free, with tickets issued in exchange for a one‑kilogram non‑perishable food donation for the Banco de Alimentos do Recife.

The following day, 2 August, artist Juliana Linhares performed “Até Cansar o Cansaço,” a multimedia piece inspired by neuroscientist Sidarta Ribeiro. Linhares sang, acted and spoke about the relationship between word, body and voice, emphasizing a slower, more reflective experience. This show also required a food donation for entry and was part of the same festival program.
