Reciprocity bias drives success of welcome offers, study shows

Welcome offers such as discount codes, free trial periods or complimentary gifts continue to attract consumers because they tap into the psychological principle of reciprocity. First described by Robert Cialdini in the 1980s, the bias makes people feel obliged to return a favor, increasing trust in a brand and the likelihood of purchase.

The effect is reinforced by reduced perceived risk – a free sample lets shoppers test quality before committing – and by emotional factors like feeling valued and fear of missing out. While the tactic remains effective across entertainment platforms, financial services, telecoms and e‑commerce, marketers warn that offers that appear too good to be true may hide hidden costs and should be scrutinised.
