Recklinghausen cancer screening rates decline among men

In the Recklinghausen district, participation in free cancer screening programs remains low, particularly among men. According to data from AOK NordWest, only 20.1 percent of men aged 45 and older utilized these services in 2025, a slight decrease from 20.2 percent in the previous year.

In contrast, the participation rate for women increased from 34.5 percent to 36.6 percent. However, health officials note that the majority of women still do not utilize the available screenings.

Jörg Kock, service region manager at AOK, described the declining participation rates among men as ‘alarming.’ The health insurance provider is urging residents to take advantage of these free services, noting that early diagnosis significantly improves treatment ease and chances of recovery. Men are eligible for annual screenings starting at age 45, while women are eligible starting at age 20.
