Recklinghausen commuters: NGG union demands mobility allowance
The NGG Ruhrgebiet union is calling for a mobility allowance to assist commuters in the Recklinghausen district facing rising fuel costs. The union proposes a payment of 17 cents per kilometer, which could be distributed by the state or managed through monthly income tax deductions.
According to statistics from the Bundesagentur für Arbeit, approximately 181,100 employees commute across the district borders daily. This includes 63,400 people commuting into Recklinghausen and 117,660 people commuting out of the district. NGG Managing Director Martin Mura noted that high travel costs disproportionately impact low-income earners, especially since public transportation is often not a viable option due to poor connections or shift work schedules.
