Recklinghausen Greens propose urban cooling project at Lohtor

The Green Party faction in Recklinghausen has submitted a proposal to the city council to transform the green space at Lohtor into a ‘cool island’ to combat rising temperatures.

The plan involves installing water features, such as a fountain or pond, and adding more benches to the area located between the Per Kirkeby brick sculpture and the Lohtor memorial. According to faction leader Volker Schäper-Beckenbach, the water installations are intended to lower ambient temperatures through evaporation and improve the local microclimate by retaining rainwater.

Additionally, the proposal aims to improve accessibility and comfort for elderly people and those with limited mobility by providing more seating options to facilitate breaks on the sloped terrain near the historical Lohtorfriedhof.
