Recommended weight limits for children's school backpacks
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics via HealthyChildren.org, a child's school backpack should not exceed 15% of their total body weight. For practical daily use, a more conservative limit of 10% is often recommended.
For example, a child weighing 20 kilograms should ideally carry a bag of approximately 2 kilograms, with 3 kilograms serving as the 15% maximum limit. For a 25-kilogram child, a suitable daily weight is around 2.5 kilograms, while 3.75 kilograms represents the 15% threshold.
While a meta-analysis in the European Journal of Pain involving over 18,000 children found no direct link between bags exceeding 10% of body weight and higher prevalence of back pain, biomechanical studies suggest heavy loads can alter posture, walking speed, and stride length. Parents are advised to watch for signs of excessive weight, such as a child leaning forward, difficulty putting on the bag, complaints of neck or shoulder pain, or visible strap marks on the shoulders.
