Record cancels presidential debate due to Lula and Flávio Bolsonaro absences
The Brazilian broadcaster Record has canceled its presidential debate scheduled for September 27. The decision follows the refusal of the two leading candidates, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Flávio Bolsonaro, to participate in the event.
Record stated that the absence of the candidates who together hold approximately 70% of the voting intention would prevent the debate from fulfilling its purpose of confronting the main political proposals. The network noted that a debate held so close to the first round of elections, scheduled for October 4, requires the presence of the primary contenders to offer voters a meaningful exchange of ideas.
Flávio Bolsonaro’s campaign has indicated a strategy of only participating in debates if Lula is present, citing the risk of being targeted by other candidates in his absence. Meanwhile, Lula’s campaign has shown resistance to participating in first-round debates.
With the Record cancellation, the TV Globo debate, scheduled for October 1, remains the final major televised confrontation before the first round. Record has announced that if the election proceeds to a second round, a new presidential debate will be held on October 11.
