Record Summer Visitor Numbers at Mladečské Caves in the Czech Republic
Mladečské jeskyně near Litovle in the Olomouc region recorded a new summer visitation record, with 335 guests on a Tuesday as the Czech Republic endured a heat wave with temperatures above 30 °C. The usual summer daily attendance is around 200, and guides now conduct nine to ten tours per day, each lasting about 30 minutes.
Cave administration spokesperson Simona Arnošová said the influx shows how visitors seek the caves' constant 7‑14 °C climate for relief from the heat. Pavel Gejdoš of the Správa jeskyní ČR added that the caves maintain high humidity (up to 99 %) and a cool temperature, making them comfortable for breathing. The Czech Republic currently operates 13 publicly accessible caves, including the well‑known Bozkovské dolomitové, Koněpruské, Javoříčské, and Zbrašovské aragonitové caves, among others.
Visitors described the experience as a stark contrast to the outside heat, with many swapping summer clothing for sweaters after entering the cool chambers. The record highlights the role of natural underground sites as informal cooling shelters during extreme summer weather.
