Stray Kids joins BTS in boycotting 2027 Grammy Awards

K-pop group Stray Kids has announced they will not submit any music for the 69th Grammy Awards, joining BTS in a boycott against the Recording Academy. The decision follows the Academy's announcement that it will proceed with a new category, ‘Best Asian Pop Music Performance,’ scheduled to debut in February 2027.

Critics and several major K-pop acts argue that the new category, which requires the ‘meaningful use’ of Asian languages, risks segregating Asian artists from major mainstream categories like ‘Album of the Year.’ Proponents of the boycott, including BTS, have expressed a desire for music to be judged on its own merit rather than being divided by region or language.

Despite opposition from prominent artists, Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. confirmed the category will remain. Mason stated that while the Academy acknowledges the disagreement, they have received significant support for the new category from various members of the music community.
