Recording Academy reviews Asian Pop category after BTS boycott
The Recording Academy is considering a revamp of its newly introduced Best Asian Pop Music Performance category following significant backlash and a boycott by the global K-pop group BTS. The group announced they would not submit their music, including the album ‘Arirang’, for the 2027 Grammy Awards, stating they hope music is “heard and loved for what it is, rather than being divided by region or language.”
Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. acknowledged the criticism, noting that despite intentions of inclusivity, many artists feel the category does not adequately represent their work. Mason stated, “The Grammy organization exists to serve all musicians and ensure no community is misunderstood.”
To address these concerns, the Academy has convened its Board of Trustees and the Awards & Nominations Committee to consult with industry stakeholders. These discussions include representatives from the K-pop, J-pop, C-pop, and Indian music industries, as well as management from HYBE. The Academy aims to determine the best way to honor Asian pop music with respect and accuracy moving forward.
