Recording Academy considers revamping Asian Pop category after BTS boycott

The Recording Academy is considering a revamp of its new Best Asian Pop Music Performance category for the 2027 awards following backlash from the music community. The controversy stems from a decision by the K-pop group BTS to boycott the awards, announcing they would not submit their recordings for consideration this year.

In a joint statement, BTS expressed a desire for music to be “heard and loved for what it is, rather than being divided by region or language.” Critics of the new category argue that such labels may isolate Asian artists from the broader industry, noting that the term “Asian pop” is an extremely broad label that encompasses diverse cultures and subgenres including K-pop, J-pop, and C-pop.

Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason, Jr. has defended the move, stating that more categories allow more artists to be recognized by voters and that the intent is to expand recognition rather than divide. The Academy is currently engaging in dialogues with various stakeholders, including musicians, labels, and HYBE, to advise on how to honor the music respectfully and accurately.
