Recovery Times for Wrist and Finger Fractures

A simple wrist fracture typically requires six to eight weeks for the bone to heal, while more complex or displaced fractures may extend the recovery period to several months. Treatment often begins with immobilisation in a splint or cast, followed by physiotherapy to restore function.

Finger fractures present intense pain, swelling, bruising and limited motion. The National Health Service advises immediate elevation, icing and removal of jewellery, and, if possible, “buddy‑taping” the injured finger to a neighbour. Radiographic examination determines whether the break is simple, displaced or open; simple fractures are usually managed with an splint for a few weeks, whereas displaced or open fractures may need surgical fixation. Bone consolidation generally occurs in four to six weeks, with full functional recovery by six to eight weeks.

Both articles stress that timely medical assessment, appropriate immobilisation and a gradual rehabilitation programme are essential to minimise complications and achieve optimal healing.
