Recreo prison inmates' families protest living conditions

Family members of inmates held at the Unidad Penitenciaria N° 9 in Recreo staged protests following the recent transfer of detainees to the new facility. Approximately 40 to 50 people gathered at the prison entrance to demand information and better living conditions.

Protesters reported that many inmates were moved “de la noche a la mañana” (overnight) without prior notice to their families. Concerns were raised regarding the loss of access to educational and work programs that inmates previously enjoyed in other pavilions.

Specific grievances include allegations of mistreatment, inadequate food, lack of access to water, and insufficient warm clothing or blankets. Families also expressed concern over the health of detainees and the difficulty of maintaining communication, noting that some inmates have been placed in isolated sectors of the complex.
