Rectal cancer diagnosis highlights importance of monitoring gastrointestinal warning signs

Medical professionals are warning against dismissing gastrointestinal symptoms as mere work stress following a case where a 60-year-old executive was diagnosed with rectal adenocarcinoma. The individual, who experienced irregular eating habits and a busy lifestyle, lost 8 kilograms in one year and suffered from bloating and diarrhea, which he initially attributed to stress.

Upon undergoing a colonoscopy at Beitou Health Management Hospital, doctors identified a suspected malignant tumor. In addition to rectal cancer, the patient was found to have reflux esophagitis, gastric ulcers, H. pylori infection, and superficial gastritis.

Dr. Liang Cheng-chao advises that early symptoms of colorectal cancer are often atypical and may not include blood in the stool or severe pain. Warning signs include changes in bowel habits lasting more than two to three weeks, abdominal bloating, alternating constipation and diarrhea, thin stools, unexplained weight loss, or anemia. Regular screenings via colonoscopy are recommended, especially for individuals over 40 or those with a family history of colorectal cancer.
