Recycling labels face stricter standards amid consumer confusion
Consumers are increasingly calling for clearer recycling labels to reduce confusion regarding which materials can be processed and how they should be disposed of. In the United States, a survey by the Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC) found that while nearly two-thirds of respondents recycle frequently, a lack of clear information remains a significant barrier to effective waste management.
Regulatory shifts are also addressing these labeling issues. In California, the SB 343 law, known as ‘Truth in Labeling for Recyclable Materials’, will implement stricter requirements starting October 4. Under this law, products claiming to be recyclable must meet rigorous criteria regarding their accessibility to local collection and sorting systems. This places a new challenge on companies to not only design recyclable packaging but to communicate disposal instructions accurately to consumers.
