Recycling technologies implement financial incentives for waste management

Various regions are implementing technological solutions to improve recycling efficiency and consumer participation through financial incentives.

In Porto Velho, Brazil, the municipal government has introduced the Recicla Pay program. This initiative utilizes machines that allow residents to deposit recyclable materials, such as PET bottles and aluminum cans, in exchange for points. These points can be converted into money via Pix or other benefits. The collected waste is sent to the Cata Norte cooperative in Vila Princesa, where it is processed into raw materials for industry, supporting a circular economy and reducing environmental pollution.

In Portugal, the Volta system manages the return of plastic bottles and cans at supermarkets. While consumers can receive vouchers for their deposits, retailers have the right to refuse vouchers issued by competing supermarket chains for use as direct purchase discounts. However, under the Specific Waste Flow Management Regime, supermarkets are legally prohibited from preventing consumers from recovering the deposit value in cash.
