Red Bull drives Formula 1 car through Madrid Metro tunnels

A Madrid-based creative studio, Andtonic, has successfully completed a project to drive a Formula 1 car through the Madrid Metro tunnels. The project, funded and driven by Red Bull, involved approximately 18 months of technical preparation to adapt the vehicle for the subway environment.

Because metro tracks rely on wheel geometry rather than steering wheels or traditional tires, engineers had to develop custom aluminum wheels and conduct extensive calculations between Madrid and Red Bull Racing’s UK headquarters. The demonstration featured the RB8, the car used by Sebastian Vettel during his 2012 World Championship season, with former driver Patrick Friesacher at the wheel.

The initiative was designed to promote the use of the Metro to reach the Madrid Formula 1 circuit.
