Max Verstappen faces grid penalty and traffic issues in Mexico City

Max Verstappen experienced a challenging qualifying session at the Mexico City Grand Prix. Despite showing competitive pace, the Red Bull driver was unable to secure pole position due to two primary factors: a grid penalty and traffic interference.

Verstappen received a one-place grid penalty following an incident with Liam Lawson during the second free practice session. Additionally, during his final qualifying attempt, Verstappen reported that turbulent air from slower cars and the presence of Lando Norris in the final sector disrupted his braking points and caused him to lock his wheels in turn 13. He stated that his pace was sufficient for pole before these interruptions.

Red Bull Racing has introduced technical upgrades to the RB22 for this event, including a modified engine cover and redesigned sidepods to improve cooling at the high altitude of the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. Team principal Laurent Mekies expressed optimism for the race, suggesting that while Verstappen will start from fifth, a podium finish remains a realistic goal.
