Red Bull rolls out major RB22 upgrades for Verstappen at Austrian Grand Prix

Red Bull Racing has introduced a second major upgrade to Max Verstappen's RB22 for the Austrian Grand Prix. The package focuses on improving the car’s energy recovery and electrical output, while also reducing excess weight to bring the chassis close to the minimum 768 kg limit. Team chief Laurent Mekies said the changes should help close the gap to the leading rivals, adding that “further steps will be needed to truly compete with Mercedes.” The enhancements follow earlier updates applied in Miami and Canada and aim to boost Verstappen’s pace on the short Red Bull Ring, potentially influencing his championship outlook as negotiations on his future with the team continue.

The upgrade includes a revised power‑unit gearbox and a refined energy‑delivery system, which Red Bull’s FIA‑approved power unit has been described as the most powerful currently. By shedding roughly 12 kg compared with early‑season estimates, the team expects a time gain of about 0.3 seconds per lap, a margin that could be more consequential on longer circuits such as Silverstone.
