Alexander Schlager joins Werder Bremen from Red Bull Salzburg

Austrian national team goalkeeper Alexander Schlager has completed a transfer to German Bundesliga club Werder Bremen. The 30‑year‑old moves on a free transfer from Red Bull Salzburg and signs a contract running until 2029. Werder Bremen’s head of professional football Peter Niemeyer said the club is “very pleased” to add a strong keeper who will fit well both sportingly and character‑wise.

Schlager arrives with extensive experience, including 241 Austrian Bundesliga appearances, ten Champions‑League matches and 30 caps for Austria, most recently as the starting goalkeeper at the World Cup in the United States. At Bremen he will initially serve as the second‑choice keeper behind Estonian international Karl Hein, creating competition for the number‑one shirt. Schlager expressed enthusiasm about joining the club, stating, “I am happy to be part of Werder Bremen and look forward to meeting the fans, the club, and the city.”
