Ter Apel asylum centre sees violence after aid groups withdraw

The Dutch Red Cross and VluchtelingenWerk Nederland halted assistance at the forecourt of the Ter Apel asylum‑registration centre, citing safety concerns for staff and refugees. Their departure was followed by a night of unrest: several scuffles and fights broke out among a small group of male asylum seekers, including an incident where an older refugee was kicked and a 29‑year‑old man from Budel was later arrested. Police and security intervened, four police vehicles and an ambulance were dispatched, but no injuries were reported despite broken beer bottles.

Local authorities have yet to implement structural measures. The municipality of Westerwolde says it is in daily contact with the COA and the ministry, but concrete actions remain pending. Mayor Jaap Velema noted that 150 extra emergency accommodation places have been arranged for the weekend, while the COA has declined to take over the aid organisations' duties. The situation highlights ongoing challenges in the Dutch asylum system and the need for improved safety and policy responses.
